Spring Cleaning Tips to Prevent Insurance Claims

Spring is almost here and now your home is due for a thorough cleaning. While you may be ready to do a good, deep clean of the house and finally get rid of winter’s cobwebs, there are a few more tasks you should add to your list. Certain home maintenance tasks around the home can improve your home and prevent home insurance in Thousand Oaks, CA claims!

In the House:

  • Change and Test Smoke Detectors: Spring is a good time to change the batteries in your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Ensure the alarm is in good working order and refresh the batteries if needed.
  • Clean the Dryer Hose: Some lint can get past the lint trap, making its way into the dryer hose. This can spark a fire when the dryer is running. Pull the hose off and vacuum out of all the excess lint to keep your drying cycles safe.
  • Replace Filters: While this should be done several times a year since you’re in the cleaning spirit, now is a good time to clean filters in your furnace and replace if necessary.
  • Seal Windows and Doors: Check all the seals on your windows and doors to see if there are any cracks in the caulking where leaks can form and cause damage. If you see dried out caulking, re-caulk them to keep out moisture.

Outside:

  • Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Gutters and downspouts direct water away from the roof and house. After winter, these pipes may be filled with debris and dirt, and now is a good time to clear them out.
  • Ready Your Mower for Summer: Fill your mower with gas, change the oil, sharpen the blade, and ensure it is in good working order for the season ahead.
  • Repair Cracks: Walk around your property and look for any broken, uneven or cracked surfaces in pathways or on the driveway. Fix as necessary to prevent accidents on your property.
